No.88

~ Mom's Journal ~

No. 88, it is a house we create the stories of our lives.

If memories are gifts from time then the house represents the physical environment that bonds the souls that inhabit the house.

An ordinary day would start with the children preparing for school. As early as 6:30 a.m. a group of school children would passed by in front of our house. Another group would prefer to walk on the main pipeline or "palong" behind our house, balancing with ease for the distance of about 100 meter. It can be quite tricky after rain. Either way they would exit at the main road and thereon would continue to walk another 500 meter to reach the school.

After school or weekends the children in our street would play together. On birthday, they would enjoy a game like this:

"Pass the parcel" game

My son's birthday

Solving the 1000 pieces of puzzle

Camping fun!

Back in the garden, the sound of birds chirping would bring the cats scouting for prey. In actual fact the cats are looking for an excuse to exercise as many of the rest would just continue to curl and slumber in the flower pots, against the walls and any other place they fancy. Our old-fashioned swing, apart from the place for our children to play, it is also a place for the cats to nap.

1990's

We are quite used to the idea that cats would adopt us wherever we go. They would go back to their house to eat and come back to our house to play and nap. My second daughter did adopt a cat from the shelter for animals. She named it "Tigger". Tigger is a tabby cat with beatiful gray stripes and green-yellow eyes. Tigger seldom goes out and prefer to stay in-door. Whenever my daughter studied late into the night Tigger would faithfully stayed by her side, sleeping. Hmm... not much of an Einstein cat.

Caught red-handed!

After Tigger, a shy and hungry stray cat came to our house. After feeding it for a few days, it decided to stay and we called her "Dayang". Thereafter for a short while we have the company of "Grammy Nominee", "Angel" and "Wira a.k.a Kiddo" all of them adopted by my eldest daughter. The month-old Wira actually slept in the hood of my car and I only discovered it after sending my youngest daughter to school. Thankfully it managed to secure a good place in the engine compartment and did not drop along the way. Phew! My car which we name "Grissom" has an affinity for cats. Even my mechanic said he found cats furs in the engine compartment and also at the rear bumper of the car. Guess Grissom has to decide whether it wants to be a car or a playpen for cats.

A cat named Putihah

Copy-cat

We never run out of names to name our neighbour's cats that would always come to our house. Ordinary Malay names like "Mak Meow", "Gebu", "Labu", "Labi" and sometimes a bit fancy name like "Super Force". The owner would of course called them by different names.

Good morning?

Rabbit named Wabbit

We had pets like rabbits, fish that range from "ikan puyu" or climbing perch to gold fish and arowana. The ikan puyu would jumped out of its bowl while practicing its jumping skill. The gold fish didn't last long while the graceful arowana managed to grow to about a foot long. We also had two yellow birds named "Abang" and "Kakak".

My youngest daughter, then an 8 years old, would offer a prayer or Du'a when they passed on. She would said "Ya Allah, saya ada dua ekor kucing dan burung yang bernama Tigger, Dayang, Abang dan Kakak. Tolonglah jaga dia orang baik-baik. Saya harap Allah terima permintaan saya ini. Tolonglah Allah Yang Maha Besar, Penyayang dan Pengampun"

Translation: Oh Allah, I have two cats and birds named Tigger, Dayang, Abang and Kakak. Please look after them with care. Please fulfill my wish. Allah The Great, The Merciful and The All-forgiving.

We remember many stories about the cats. One of them, Lima-er, is a legend. One day to our horror we saw it fighting a snake in our garden. Lima-er was quite old by then but she won. She ate the head and left the body for me to dispose. Horror indeed!

Lima-er the Cat

In daytime we can see squirrels with their acrobatic maneuvers and feisty chattering chasing one another. The cats are quite used to them and hardly made any effort to chase or catch them. I guess cats prefer birds. Sometimes small birds would come in flock to search for food in our garden. Once, I placed a big round shallow flower pot in the garden for the birds to drink and take a dip. Unfortunately they became fresh meat for the cats. I then planted waterlily in the flower pot. At times I saw one or two birds drop by to take a sip and quickly flew away as the cats would occasionally drank from the same flower pot.

The garden is not the only playground. The telephone line is also a cable for the furry animal which we believed to to be "musang" or civet to come to our roof. We didn't think it was possible until one night we saw it hanging upside down as it glided along the cable. There were rambutans and mango trees in our neighbours' gardens. They are to be shared by humans and animals alike. And so, when we saw bats and an owl made themselves at home at our backyard, we were not particularly surprised. Once, a racoon was caught wandering inside our house on that one particular day. That definitely surprised us.

We also had monitor lizards cruising our garden. Apparently they are friends with Lima-er the Cat. Sometimes they came right to our sliding door and looked inside. They must be thinking that it's a trip to the zoo! It's all about perspective. Just before we left, a baby monitor lizard, we named him "Baby ML", paid us a visit perhaps to update us about his family. Have a good life baby ML and family. Farewell.

We all have many stories in our lives. Memories are made of these.

MASA

~ Mom's Journal ~

Ingatan daripada seorang kakak buat adik tersayang.
Sebuah renungan dari Imam Al-Ghazali:

Yang paling jauh bukannya bintang,
mentaripun bukan, jua rembulan
tapi.... adalah MASA yang berlalu
dan tidak akan kembali

Kelmarin yang luput
menjadi secangkir kenangan
semalam yang terluput
mengukir sesalan
yang ada, hanyalah hari ini
dan akan datang.

Gunakanlah hari ini
dengan sebaiknya
kerana esok
belum tentu milik kita
sedangkan semalam telah pergi
untuk selamanya...

Malay Wedding

On my fourth semester, I received yet another interesting final project and this time it was the course named Office Software Applications (OMT255). We have been assigned to do our own website using only our skills in HTML coding. And the topic was on Malaysian Weddings

When it comes to weddings, of course, designs and concept hold the highest priority. And that alone made creativity, a plus score. Which meant the website should not only include all the beautiful pictures and colors changes, but also inserting graphics.

For this blog entry, I am focusing on the Malay Wedding Ceremony.

There are a few steps in the Traditional Malay Wedding:

1. Adat Merisik ("Spying" Custom)

This Adat is a getting-to-know family visit. Representatives from the man’s family will visit the girl’s family to enable both families to get accustomed to each other. If both parties agree, then the discussion will proceed into the engagement ceremony or the 'meminang' ceremony.

2. Adat Meminang (Engagement Ceremony)

When both families have agreed for the marriage between the prospective bride and the prospective bridegroom, preparation for 'meminang' or engagement takes place. On the day of the engagement, the young man's party will bring the items agreed upon on the gift trays. The girl's family will reciprocate with extra gift trays. The couple will not be represented by their parents but by selected persons, often senior relatives. These persons will be the spokesmen for the respective families.

The mother/grandmother of the groom-to-be will then slipped the engagement ring on the bride-to-be finger as a sign that she is now betrothed.

3. Akad Nikah (Solemnization)

Solemnization comes, once the period of engagement is completed. The ceremony involves the bride and groom, the kadi (state-appointed Muslim judge who officiates the ceremony), the wali (the one who gives the girl away in marriage, usually her father), two witnesses, and the (lafaz nikah) marriage vow, which the groom must recite in one breath. Gift trays which include the mas kahwin (dowry) for the bride are exchanged once again, and this time both of them will have rings that symbolize their matrimony. The akad nikah may be held in a mosque.

However it is also common to see akad nikah being held at the bride's house.

4. Bersanding (Sitting-in-state Ceremony)

The bersanding day will begin with the sound of kompang drums thumping and the groom arrived with his entourage carrying bunga manggar (decorative flower parade). They will be greeted by a shower of flower petals and a Silat (Malay martial arts) performance. The groom, together with his bride will then sit on the pelamin or dais. Bersanding ceremony may be held at a house, a hotel or a resort.

 Selamat Pengantin Baru!

Aspirations

~ Mom's Journal ~

It was a dinner conversation between a father and daughter at a mamak restaurant. The daughter, Ekeen, talked about her work. She had just graduated then, joined the work force and soon got immersed with work. Her father asked how she occupied her free time.

Father: So, what games do you play?

She replied with much enthusiasm.

Ekeen:  Oh! I played Final Fantasy… and… and…

She was all animated as she described the games she played. A fantasy to behold! She went into a lengthy and detail descriptions about the characters in the games. The heroes, the enemies, the weapons, the power, the battle, the hope and despair and finally winning the game. Only a player would know the satisfaction of winning!

The response from her father was totally unexpected. He laughed so loud that all eyes were turned on them.

Father: I was asking about outdoor games like badminton :)

She was dumbfounded. What was that again?? Not RPG?

Abah's Trophies

It was not a miscommunication, it was a misinterpretation. Her father was active in sports and field games hence his point of reference would differ from his daughter. He loves rugby, a game he played since his MCKK days. He also played other games such as badminton, table tennis and of course, football.

The boys do not play rugby but they like football. Khairul Amin’s interest in football since his primary school days continues to his adult life. As many other young working adults he now plays futsal. Recently he took to cycling together with his wife and toddler son.

      Football Awards                    Street soccer Awards

The girls had their shares in the track events. However there are times when reward did not commensurate with efforts.

                           Third place award                             Feeling sad

Nora was really disappointed, she wrote “usaha yang sia-sia” or “wasted efforts”. She was so close to being 'Olahragawati' or sportswoman for that year, but lost because of the bronze award. She had won three gold medals prior to that. I think, the important thing for her to remember is, she set her target to win, made the effort and participated in the spirit of a good sportsmanship. Regardless, well done, Nora! She was in form 5 then. She has since settled down and has a beautiful family.

Other than sports activities, there is also co-curriculum. In school there are children who are not keen in sports activities. Co-curriculum provides opportunities for children like Syazleen to build other skills to balance their academic achievements.

Co-curriculum Awards

As for me, I try to keep the prizes and awards in good condition but sometimes the name of the school or the inscription went missing:

Oops...

Fortunately the others are still presentable,

Prizes and awards won over the years

Every family would normally go through the same cycle. Prizes and awards, or the absence of them, do not change the love of parents for their children. Every child is an "amanah" for the parents. They are always concern about the well-beings of their children. They try to be there for them, from birth to kindergarten to working life and at all other times whenever possible. Along the way, dear children, we try to understand and appreciate RPG too…

As the year comes to a close, at a nearby school, the sessions end on a happy note. A father shared a happy moment with his daughter.

En. Yoi and daughter, Khalisah

Congratulations to all, nice smiles :)

And this is yet another beginning.
